The TRUTH about nasal rinses | Doctor REACTS and EXPLAINS (2025)

I have a cpap machine so my nasal passages MUST be clear. Otherwise I cant use it. I also have a deviated septum. ive used everything you can think of. Saline sprays, Alkalol, Neti Pot, NeilMed etc. Also tried to tricks of pressing here on your face which is supposed to open things up. Zero of them worked. The only product that works is Afrin mist. And over time the Afrin makes it worse. The second thing that helps is going to the gym and sitting in the sauna for a bit. the heat opens up sinuses. i then blow my nose. A shower is not hot enough.

You really should have that deviated septum operated then, I suffer the same as you and after suffering with this damn nose for the majority of my life, I am now looking into getting it fixed. I recommend you consider the leap too

Damn that *really* sucks!! I'm in the same boat as you (but I've been to scared to try nasal rinses), I cannot sleep flat or else my nose stuffs up completely. It wasn't until like 5 years ago that I realized if I got that afrin spray I didn't need to stuffer. I always have to sleep with 3 pillows to keep my head elevated, any time my head rolls off immediately I'm dreaming about not being able to breathe and waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat from breathing through my mouth. I cannot go ANYWHERE without my afrin just in case. Lately I've been noticing whenever I spray it, I wait for it clear, then I can breathe again theres this .. I don't know what it is but when I breathe in it feels like something ... man I don't know how to describe it.. I breathe in and it feels like this flap like I'm potentially breathing something in deeper into my nose and so because I'm a always try to blow everything out (like I hate how people will snort pulling snot in), but when I'm breathing out/blowing nothing comes out. It'll get to the point where my nose starts tingling because it's driving me crazy! I don't have this when I'm just breathing normally. Anyway.. I'm sorry for this huge long rant. Oh right, sorry what I was meaning to say is I was hoping maybe using one of those cpap machines would help keep my nasal passages open (my partner has one, we sleep at different times.. not like I would actually use it.. I just got curious because sometimes I'm so desperate). It sounds like your nose is struggling with inflammation. Does this open happen when you're trying to sleep? I ask because I wonder if caffeine would help, but if it keeps you awake its not going to help. Bless your heart dude that's awful. Does keeping your head elevated help any? I don't use afrin per se, I don't know what active ingredient is in it. I use this vicks sinex severe, its active ingredient is Oxymetazoline 0.05%. Okay yeah they're the same thing. Have you tried flonase? I heard from another doctory looking dude on here flonase is safe to use regularly

I had the same issue and just had surgery. Best thing I’ve ever done. I’m still recovering but myCPAP hasn’t been helping since I’ve been clogged and deviated septum. They also found a bone spur and a nasal collapse. The surgery is easy.

Hey man I hope you read this because I just want to say Ive been there......where I lost all function in my nose to breathe at all.......I got a injury on my nose with messed it up and deviated my septum bad.....plus sinus infections....plus inflammation.....I went to doctors for 3 years all they did was give me nasal sprays(never worked)....gave me antibiotics (helped for a week bfore I got a infection again) but they cant give me to much antibiotics.....they lastly gave me nasal rinse but my nostrils were to tight for it to go in and more sprays thatofc didnt work.....they basically for the last 2 months told me I had a death sentence (speaking metaphorically im alive) that with my nose I would get sick nonstop and I did and suffered and the worst part I couldnt sleep I slept sitting to breathe better and developed a terrible cough becuase I pnly breathed thru my mouth......then came the final resorrt from a doctor and that was surgery specifically "septoplasty" to fix my deviated septum.....they told me to try nasal sprays which I said nope fuck that I was tired of spending my money and said schedule me the surgery which was the septoplasty and 2 other procedures which were mentioned later to reduce me turbinates (inflammatiom) and removed my adnoids(I spelled it wrong I think).......and ALL I HAVE TO SAY AFTER THAT WEEK OF A SHITTY PAUNFUL RECOVER.....it was all worth it I was able to breathe normally thanks to my lord and savior for the opportunity but I felt normal....so all im trying to say get that surgery it will be so much worth and it will help you this is me trying to give you hope go for a surgery to replace your deviated septum
